Your ten-step starting checklist

  1. Describe your idea. What are you selling, who is it for, and what problem does it solve?
  2. Research the market. Identify customers, competitors, and a realistic starting budget.
  3. Make a simple business plan. Set your offerings, pricing, goals, and initial expenses.
  4. Choose a legal structure. Consider a sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation, or other option; liability and tax treatment differ.
  5. Choose and check your business name. Look for name conflicts and determine whether an assumed business name is necessary.
  6. Register where required. Confirm state, local, tribal, and professional requirements that apply to your actual business.
  7. Review tax IDs and taxes. An EIN is free from the IRS when needed; not every business requires one.
  8. Check licenses and permits. Requirements vary by location, industry, employees, and products.
  9. Separate business finances. Set up appropriate banking, a basic ledger, receipts, and a tax recordkeeping system.
  10. Launch responsibly. Build your contact information, website, customer policies, and a realistic promotion plan.

Montana business resources

Montana entrepreneurs can use the Montana Secretary of State business filing portal for applicable entity and assumed-name filings. An assumed business name is not the same thing as a separate LLC. Check current fees and renewals with the Secretary of State.

Federal guidance: U.S. Small Business Administration business startup guide and IRS: Apply for a free EIN. For business activity outside Montana, use the relevant state and local filing authorities.

What is coming in the member workspace?
